Lead Contaminated Toys Pose Risk To Children

There are so may things in this world that can be detrimental to our health that it seems like we should always be on the look out for risks, but sometimes they come in the unexpected places. For example, recently there have been a spate of recalls of children's toys due to dangerous levels of lead paint despite its use being discontinued in the US for many years. Unfortunately, because we live in a global market, often our goods are produced in other countries and that means that they may not meet the standards we hold in regards to safety.

If toys contain lead or lead paint then they can be dangerous as they expose children to lead. Young children have a habit of putting toys in their mouth and so they risk small amounts of lead getting into their body and if the object contains to much lead then this can be bad. Most children do have a small level of lead in their blood and are naturally exposed to lead on a daily basis. However, even low levels of additional lead can be dangerous especially to very young children.

According to official sources, the worst culprit when it comes to lead poisoning is lead based paint in older buildings because when it chips or peels it can send up dangerous lead dust. Lead can also contaminate soil and drinking water. Additionally, glazed pottery and jewlery may be treated with lead based glaze. However, perhaps the most concerning is the toys with lead based paint. If you suspect that your child has been exposed to such toys then the first step is to take the toy away from your child. If you are concerned about exposure then get your child checked out by a doctor. Children with low levels of lead may exhibit no apparent symptoms, but when the levels are above 40 micrograms/dL the symptoms include abdominal cramps, constipation, lethargy and in the worst cases seizures.

Minimizing The Health Risks of Water Damage

If you have experienced flooding in your property then you may already know that aside from the physical water damage, you will also need to pay heed to the potential health risks that it brings with it. There are a number of ways that you can minimize not only the extent of the damage, but also the hazard to your health.

When flooding is brought about by natural causes such as heavy rain or an overflowing river, then there will be a very high likelihood that the flood water is contaminated from mixing with water from sewage and drainage systems. This type of water is known as 'grey' water and is rife with bacteria and micro-organisms. That means it is very important to ensure that all harmful bacteria is killed and that the area is treated to ensure that the germs do not spread following the flood. Stagnant water it is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and will also attract insects like fleas and ticks all of which can spread disease, so it is essential that the problem is handled appropriately.

If the flooding is down to burst pipes or water supply problems, then it is not to say that contamination won't occur. In my experience, it is always best to assume that the flood water is contaminated which is why I would never attempt to clean up flooding on my own. I always call in a professional who is equipped to deal with the potential problems.

Some precautions you can take are to not drink anything other than bottled water until local authorities give the all clear and to ensure your water supply has been decontaminated. Never underestimate the health risks that come hand in hand with flooding.

No Tears For Katy

My niece is heavily into body piercing, and she came home and told my brother that she is now intending to get a new body modification called a 'dermal teardrop'. My brother wasn't really sure what this was and asked me to tell him if it was actually safe or not since he knows I have done a fair amount of research into piercings and what not. However, I wasn't too sure about this one so I had to do a little research!

I already new that dermal anchors were a method of surface piercing where the anchor is surgically placed under the skin and the jewelry screwed onto a protrusion so I figured it must be something like that. On further investigation I discovered that a dermal teardrop was exactly that, but located just below the eye so it looks like you are crying a diamond! It sounds pretty right? However, there are of course ugly side effects!

Any time you mess with the eye region, it makes me nervous. The eye is very delicate, and it actually does not take very much to make you blind! In the case of the dermal teardrop the biggest risk – like with most body modification – is actually infection. However, this type of body modification is prone to 'inward traveling infections'. In most situations, if a piercing becomes infected it begins on the skin surrounding the wound. The body is programmed to produce a duct to push the infection out through the pores. However, with a dermal teardrop the infection tends to grow in reverse which can often lead to the infected duct bursting below the skin and allowing the infection to reach the bloodstream. This means the infection can quickly spread throughout the body very quickly and is often fatal.

Some more minor risks with this dermal teardrop include heavy bruising. Any body modification usually results in some bruising, but around the eyesocket is delicate and often the dermal teardrop procedure results in dark bruising lasting around 2 weeks. Not a good look for a teenage girl! Then of course we have implant rejection risks. If the body decides to reject the implant (after all any piercing is a foreign object) then the area can become irritated and the skin will peel away until the implant comes to the surface. Again, not a good look – I hear zombie chic is so last season!

So after relaying this to my brother who in turn told my niece.. Katy is no longer indulging in a dermal teardrop. Not only because her father forbid her, but because she actually wasn't aware of the risks and decided against it herself. There is a lesson there. If you want a body modification, do your homework!

Smoke Damage Leaves More Than Odor

Smoke odor is often trapped following a fire and lingers on your clothing and textiles. However, it is not only smoke odor which is a concern following a fire in your home. Smoke inhalation is a very common health matter for victims of any fire, along with the firefighters who save them. Smoke inhalation is the primary cause of death in victims of indoor fires and can cause devastating injury and death.
Smoke inhalation is actually a situation in which you inhale hazardous smoke. The ailment is usually clinically diagnosed by bronchoscopy, blood testing, chest x-ray, blood gases, or pulmonary functionality assessments. Smoke inhalation could potentially cause irregular chest sounds along with a reduced pulse rate. Smoke inhalation is a major determinant in the mortality of fire victims. Smoke inhalation is a serious, life-threatening injury, and treatment should be given as soon as possible. Smoke inhalation is best avoided by preventing structural fires. Smoke inhalation is responsible for a large number of the deaths caused by structural fires each year. Smoke inhalation is more commonly associated with fire deaths than burns. Smoke inhalation may result in such substantial irritation that the air passage is occluded by swelling in the pharynx.

Improvements That Increase Safety In Your Home

Old Ugly Bathroom (Before)
Any homeowner will tell you that owning and maintaining a home is both expansive and time consuming. On average, homeowners spend between 1 and 3 percent of their home's value on repairs and improvement. There are many ways to reduce costs and make your home more valuable thanks to home improvement: go over these tips before you start planning your next home improvement project.
Make sure to verify with your contractor's insurance company to make sure that they are actually insured. Unscrupulous contractors may try to hoodwink consumers by presenting an expired insurance card when asked for proof of insurance.

The first thing to consider is safety. If you live in an older property it is advisable to have the building assessed by professionals for both asbestos and lead based paints. Often these substances are found in older buildings and while they are fairly safe when left as they are, if they are disturbed during remodeling work they can get dangerous for everyone in the building.

When renovating, a smart homewoner will spend his money on good quality materials and fixtures instead of expensive decor and furniture. There's a simple reason for this--decorative items and furniture get moved out along with the homeowner when the house gets sold. You want to add value to your home, and by buying durable products that remain there, you do that.

Stained wood is more aesthetically pleasing than painted whenever you're replacing baseboards. The classic look of finished wood complements virtually any home decor style. Stained backboards also serve the benefit of defending against stains and marks, which can increase its longevity. There are many colors of stain to match your decor.

Things like painting or adding a deck to your home can improve your home's quality by a lot. Decks could give you a great place to entertain your guests and you could use it in a hot summer day to relax.
Check the credentials of any professional you employ for any home improvement projects. You must be sure that they have the qualifications to do the job correctly and that the job will be completed using the highest possible standards. The easiest way to verify a contractor's bona fides is by checking his credentials with the relevant licensing authority.

Making sure that your gutters are clean is a great way to improve your home. When your gutters are clogged with debris, the water is trapped and can cause leaks. This may end up causing the wood to rot. It is important to maintain clean gutters at all times!

Adding an extra bathroom can really increase the value of your home. It is easy to understand that an additional bathroom is handy, particularly when each bathroom is on a different floor of the home. It is very likely that multiple household members will need access to the bathroom simultaneously. You must ensure the bathroom is properly installed to avoid leaks which can lead to water damage and mold.

Always keep safety at the front of your mind. While it may seem silly to wear a hardhat in your own home, if a chunk of drywall were to fall, you would at least be protected. Having hardhats, goggles, and breathing apparatus can help to keep you healthy while you take care of your home.

The Threat Posed By Sewage Spills

English: Protective Clothing. Workers in protective clothing to guard against contamination from hazardous waste. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Just hearing the word 'sewage' conjures up vivid images of disgusting, sludgy matter. We all know exactly what it is and where it comes from, so it is horrifying when a burst sewage main means that you are faced with a sewage spill inside of your home. It's not just the fact that it is human excrement, it is also the smell and yet so many are still careless when it comes to cleaning it up. The fact is, sewage can pose a major health risk to us. It contains a multitude of pathogens and allergens which can transmit a variety of diseases.

Sewage is actually considered to be a bio-hazard and it must be handled very carefully. A sewage spill is not something you would attempt on your own. It requires protective clothing and specialist disposal procedures. Exposure to sewage can result in chronic respiratory illnesses and many other viral, fungal, bacterial and parasitic health conditions. Contact with raw sewage or sewage contaminated waters can cause infections on the skin and ingestion of these materials can result in serious stomach illnesses. The many bacteria and viruses which live in raw sewage are also able to enter the blood stream via the smallest break in the skin which includes any cuts or grazes. These illnesses can be severe and in many cases fatal. This is why it is important not to take any risks where sewage is involved.

I will admit to being overly cautious about my health. Whenever I have experienced flooding, which used to be fairly regularly when we lived in Georgia, I would always assume that the water was potentially contaminated with sewage. I would rather call in the professionals who have the equipment and protective clothing than risk contracting one of the many diseases that sewage contamination is linked to.

Let's Talk About Mold

Mold is found everywhere, indoors and outdoors, but is normally found indoors at levels that do not affect most healthy individuals. Mold is usually found where humidity and moisture levels are high, such as basements, kitchens and bathrooms. Mold can develop when the combination of the right temperature, mold spores, moisture and a food source are present. Mold was able to grow because it has a moisture source.

Mold is constructed from mold material surrounding temporary part material which defines the mold cavity. Mold is naturally occurring and can develop on virtually any material if the conditions which foster mold development are present. Mold spores can survive harsh environmental conditions, such as dry conditions, that do not support normal mold growth. Mold can begin to grow in as little as 48 hours in conditions of elevated temperature and relative humidity. Mold spores are in the air at all times but are dormant unless activated by elevated temperature and humidity.

Mold spores are constantly moving through the air - both indoor and outdoor. Mold spores are very tiny and lightweight, and this allows them to travel through the air. Mold is a common problem in many homes, and even conscientious homeowners can sometimes run into a mold problem. Mold has certainly made its way into people's homes as well as the headlines recently. Mold is extremely common in homes and buildings and will grow anywhere there is moisture.

Mold will not grow if moisture is absent. Mold spores will not grow if moisture is not present. Mold may begin growing indoors when mold spores land on surfaces that are wet. Mold is caused when microscopic, airborne spores land on moist surfaces and spread rapidly. Mold is an infestation caused on surfaces exposed to water.

Mold is almost everywhere, but it is not health to live where mold is growing. Mold can damage your home, possessions and health. Mold can be especially serious, since it can cause structural damage to your home, as well as health problems. Mold is dangerous and it can cause many health problems than carbon monoxide, termites, radon or asbestos. Mold may not cause health effects, or it may lead to symptoms in people who are sensitive to molds.

Mold can have harmful effects on human health. Mold may be present in a building and result in health effects without being visible. Mold is being dubbed “the new asbestos” in the building industry. Mold is the second leading cause of outdoor airborne allergies, with pollen being the first. Mold that grew in conjunction with moisture damage was the leading cause of occupational rhinitis.

Mold can also cause structural damage to your home by weakening the wood frame. Mold can grow on wood, ceiling tiles, wallpaper, paints, carpet, sheet rock, and insulation.

Lead Poisoning : The Risks

Childhood lead poisoning is by far the most avoidable environmental ailment in youngsters, but somewhere around One million young children continue to have raised bloodstream lead amounts. Lead poisoning can result in learning disabilities, behavior issues, convulsions and loss of life, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. It is particularly detrimental to fetuses and small children.

Most youngsters are in contact with hazardous amounts of lead if they are living in properties constructed prior to 1978 - the year during which lead based paints were banned as a result of medical problems. Federal and state governing bodies are supporting programs to scale back and eliminate the issue. To give an example, a recent $2.9 million federal government grant will soon allow the city of Indianapolis to maintain lead assessments for the local children, provide lead dust sets for many households and assist development of about 400 lead free real estate units as part of a Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration program.

The program's goal is to eliminate lead in 389 area homes, 115 of which must be rental properties. Households will be selected based on income level, risk of contamination and whether small kids or expectant mothers are on the property.

Even if your area is not currently in receipt of such grants, if you are concerned about the possibility of lead paint in your property, then you will be able to call in professional lead paint removal experts to evaluate, and if required remove lead paint from, your property.

Why Medical Aid Is NOT Just Another Variation of Health Insurance

A large number of developed/developing countries operate private healthcare systems which are largely financed by way of health insurance. In a large number of these countries, health insurance is the only hope many individuals have of being able to pay for this private healthcare. This has become a huge bug bear or many people. The huge flaw in this type of system is that insurance providers are at the most basic level money making organizations. They place their focus on turning a profit with little regard to their consumers' health. Insurers have no qualms about cutting corners to reduce costs and will often avoid risky investments, thus making some people all but uninsurable.

It's about time we looked to South Africa for guidance. A little known fact is that South Africa is actually a world leader when it comes to healthcare funding. This is due in the most part to medical aid programs. Many people assume medical aid is just another way of saying health insurance, but there are some big differences. Medical aid programs are operated by non-profit organizations, meaning they focus more on providing a great service. In this respect, medical aid is considered to be considerably superior to health insurance! Medical aid has been an important factor in building what is rapidly turning out to be one of the best private healthcare systems around the world. In fact, many medical aid providers are now starting to expand services into the Middle East and the United States.

When it comes to medical aid, everyone in that particular program pays the same monthly premium regardless of the state of their health. This is an important difference between medical aid and health insurance. Insurance providers routinely deny cover to anyone with an existing long term health problem, or else make the monthly premiums ridiculously high. This is a really big deal considering that one of the massive health concerns in South Africa is HIV and AIDS. With medical aid, those individuals diagnosed with these conditions do not have to pay anything extra.

Knowing The Risks Of Tattooing

An increasing (and somewhat alarming) number of young people all over the world are jumping on the body modification band wagon by getting a tattoo. It became popular in the nineties and has been growing in popularity ever since. It is now estimated that around one in three Americans under the age of 25 have at least one tattoo. Now I'm not anti-tattoo I don't have one, but I don't mind other people having them. What does concern me is the lack of research people do before running to the local tattoo shop and getting a permanent body modification.

Pretty much everyone who hasn't been living under a rock for the last few years knows that they should use a reputable tattoo artist with high standards of cleanliness. However, for most people that is where the research and safety precautions end. What most people do not realise, is what exactly is being injected under their skin. Tattoos have their origins in tribal cultures where the dyes were made from natural ingredients such as plants, but modern day tattoo inks are composed of unknown combinations of metallic salts such as oxides, sulphates and selenides, and even plastics. A recent report by the European Commission revealed that up to 40% of the organic colorants used in tattoos are not approved for use on skin and around 20% of inks tested contained carcinogenics. Some chemicals were actually intended only for printing. In America, the FDA regulates cosmetics worn on the skin, like make up or sun screen, but they do not regulate the potentially toxic ink we have injected under it during tattooing. How does that make any sense?

There are many reported cases of allergic reactions to tattoo inks and there is also the added risk of the unknown effects of metal salts being injected into the body. Cases of psoriasis, dermatitis and even tumors have been linked to tattooing. I guess the bottom line is that unless you are fully aware of and prepared to deal with the worst case scenario, leave body modification alone.

The Facts About Smoke Inhalation

When it comes to deaths related to house fires, statistics show that the number one cause is smoke inhalation. It has been suggested that between 50 and 80 percent of deaths are from smoke inhalation rather than burns. Smoke inhalation occurs when individuals breath in the by-products of the fire. There is no way to identify the exact composition of this substance as every fire is different, but it is a combination of heated particles and gases. The exact components will depend on the substances which are burning and the amount of fuel and oxygen being consumed by the fire.

The reason why smoke inhalation causes so much damage to the body is that it triggers asphyxiation. Basic asphyxiation is a lack of oxygen, but smoke inhalation can also cause chemical asphyxiation, chemical irritation, or in many cases a mixture of all of them. In the case of basic asphyxiation, often the fire simply burns up all of the oxygen leaving none for the individual to breathe. Fires can also produce chemical compounds which can damage our ability to use oxygen on a cellular level. Some of the compounds produced are carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen sulfide. Carbon monoxide poisoning is the most common cause of death in cases of smoke inhalation. Irritant compounds are also formed during combustion and cause injury on contact with the skin or membranes. These compounds, which include sulfur dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen chloride and chlorine, can damage the respiratory tract causing swelling, airway collapse and other breathing difficulties when inhaled.

If you are involved in a fire, it is essential to be checked over by a medical professional even if you do not feel unwell. Some symptoms of smoke inhalation do not appear straight away. The symptoms include, but are not limited to, a cough, difficulties breathing, hoarseness, headaches, discoloration of the skin and sudden changes in mental health.

Fashion experts have even confessed that most people are opting to use the plugs made from natural materials since they have quite a lot of advantages with them.
Normally, there are some items that are used to stretch ones ear. They are cone shaped and are either made of steel or acrylic. They are commonly known as tapers. Is Marriage Bad for Your Health?

This is one of those blog posts that I pretty much know is going to get me in trouble! I'm engaged to get married and my lovely fiancée is a delightful woman. So let me make this disclaimer, I am not saying I don't want to get married!! This is just an interesting topic that came up on a 'boy's night out' this weekend where all but 3 of the said boys were single. They were ribbing the one married guy over him leaving early and warning myself and the other engaged guy that our future was more of the same. One of them just came out of a bitter divorce and is adamant that marriage is bad for your health. This of course prompted a light hearted discussion, but it got me thinking.. do bachelor's live longer than married men?

I took to the internet, and while I am pretty sure Google can't be considered scientific in terms of research, I did come across a study from the Institute for ClinicalEvaluative Sciences and bachelor boys I have some bad news for you all! It turns out that the love of a good woman actually CAN be good for your health – exceptionally so! The study indicates that men who are either married or in a long term common law relationship are much less likely to die from a heart attack or a stroke and on average they will live longer than single men.

The study wasn't able to prove beyond a doubt that it was marriage that was the key factor in the better health, but suggests that perhaps it is because women are natural caregivers and look after their men. Hear that woman? Ahem I mean excuse me dearest... can I have a cup of tea?

Why do we modify our bodies?

One in six Americans would be put under the knife to look more attractive - and thus put their health at risk. Like all operations, such surgical procedures involve a residual risk. The wounds can infect and cause, for example life-threatening infections. In addition to health risks also threaten disappointed expectations - often the result will not look like the patient has imagined. The doctor applies for example to a Botox injection the wrong nerve, there is a risk that the lids droop down.
Interestingly, I also found that the risk of piercings and tattoos is also high and is always underestimated.

Especially with younger people, piercings and tattoos are very popular. 35 percent of girls and women aged 14 to 24 years wear navel, nose or mouth. For men there are in the same age group, almost eight percent. Many of them know little about the associated risks. If the skin is punctured, it's always an injury that can not only be painful, but sometimes leads to lasting damage. Especially dangerous are piercings into the tongue or lower lip. They hurt the gums and cause cracks in the teeth. In some cases there is even inflammation or bleeding, which can lead to choking. Because sometimes called the piercings cause allergic reactions it can be deadly.

Tattoos are as popular as piercings - and also associated with health risks. In the age group between 25 and 34 now bears a tattoo of one in four. That can cause the piercing of body images in individual cases but bacterial infections, only very few know. Responsible for this are poor hygienic conditions in which tattoos are sometimes made. Increase primarily non-sterile needles, the infection risk. In addition, some tattoo studios are working with colors, in which health effects have not yet been sufficiently explored.

Tongue Piercings The Risks

Piercings are a statement. Conducted by experienced professional piercers they usually cause few problems, however, performed poorly, they can have devastating physical consequences. What you need to pay particular attention to are the risks associated with tongue piercing.

The risk does not begin after the piercing, but much earlier: in the piercing studio itself. Is the hygienic equipment? If the piercer maintained, he emphasizes a hygienic procedure for piercing? The studio is rather "dingy"? Particularly important is: Does he use utensils, disposable utensils or reuseable, which must be disinfected? Reuseable utensils require expensive equipment sterilization, which some studios may not want to purchase. Take care and do not be afraid to ask! If the piercer is knowledgeable about the risks and possible side effects this clears up and possible risk and complications can be avoided from the beginning.

Usually the one being pierced sits on a chair while the piercer marks the position on the tongue and secures it with a clamp. The piercing itself is performed with a needle and catheter tube. It is important to make sure that the piercing is positioned between the tongue muscles in the middle of the tongue, without injuring the frenulum, and without that it will damage the teeth broadly. In the first day there is a great deal of swelling, therefore, is first used in a long barbell in the tongue, which after swelling subsides will be replaced this with a shorter one.

Many of the larger blood vessels in the tongue to make the tongue piercing quite complicated, so specifically stated to have it carried out only by experienced piercers.

The risk of infection is minimized if the piercer makes sure that the surrounding tissue was disinfected and thoroughly cleaned, then must be maintained until two minutes for the disinfectant to work - only then may the piercing be performed. Nevertheless, after the procedure, even days later, an infection can emerge. Typical symptoms include redness, warmth of the surrounding tissue, swelling, pain and limited function of the tongue. In rare cases, taste buds may be damaged. In extreme cases, loss of taste, but usually is "only" reduces the intensity of flavor. With a complete loss of taste hardly to be expected, since most tongue piercings are pierced in the middle. There are only very little or absolutely no taste buds.

Health Risks Associated With Body Art

Tattoos and piercings have recently left social stigma behind them. Musicians and actors and other celebrities adorn themselves with a piercing or a tattoo, just like the average consumer. Today, between 400 000 and 600,000 people are pierced and even more frequently encountered is the tattoo. Piercers and tattoo artists are now considered to be profitable businesses, but their body art is going to live long under the skin and therefore should be chosen carefully. A piercer or tattooist using unsanitary practices or who is inexperienced, can not only present a health risk, but also cause you to be adorned with a picture for life that does not meet our own quality standards.

While piercings can be removed and a more or less large hole in the body area remains are tattoos a purchase for the entire life, which can also be removed, but require the help of laser treatment, access to which is often limited. The subject should be so well considered and both timeless and attractive for the entire remaining life.

Tattoos are body art. The dye is introduced here with a needle directly into the skin. The origin of tattoos is that they were thought to have magical purposes. For example, it was tradition for a tattoo to be applied to the body of a person's so called totem-animal. In our culture, tattoos were a long time associated with sailors. Meanwhile, tattoos are but across all segments of the population as almost self-evident jewelry that is worn open or more hidden on the body. Especially among young people have tattoos often have a genuine cult status. The same goes for piercings. Also the body jewelry is used to express individuality. Important for both versions is that absolutely basic rules are observed, because in both cases, there can be various health risks involved.

Generally one can say that a tattoo and a piercing is not completely pain free. How strong the pain is felt, however, depends on their perception of pain. While some customers perceive tattooing as tingling, other clients already feel pain. Depending on how strong the pain is felt, it is also, dependant on where on body the tattoo is placed. Generally, the pain is more intense on parts of the body where the skin is very thin. Especially the shoulder blade or ankle, and elbow are particularly sensitive to the tattoo. Important to know is that people who suffer from diabetes, from haemophilia or from infectious diseases should not be tattooed.

Infections are the most common risks that arise through the piercing. About 20 percent of piercings become infected. The infection is favored by poor hygiene or inept after care of the piercing . This can even lead to blood poisoning which can cause infection. Allergies can arise that are being triggered by nickel-containing jewelry. Swelling and pain, bleeding and bruising, as well as disturbances in wound healing and scarring are other health problems that may lead to the piercing itself.

Top Tips For Healthy & Happy Flights

Air travel is so commonplace these days that we rarely stop to think about possible health implications. We hop on and off aircraft like they are buses. However, on the more rare occasions where we take a long haul flight – think New York to Tokyo or San Francisco to Sydney – there are certain things to consider to keep ourselves both happy and healthy. Fifteen to Twenty hours is a long time to occupy yourself and boredom is just the start of the hazards, we also have to consider things like deep vein thrombosis and sleep deprivation. So here are some helpful hints to surviving long haul air travel.

  1. Go For The Upgrade! - If you have air miles on a credit card, then make good use of them on long haul flights. Many reward programs offer free or heavily discounted upgrades. Trust me – 24 hours in a metal tube is going to be a lot more comfortable with extra legroom, a reclining chair and decent food.
  2. Entertain Yourself! - You need a plan to burn long periods of time without going insane. Bring along some work, but don't rely on it. There is a point someplace in the middle where you will need some escapism, so buy the earphones and watch movies, take an iPad with favorite viewing options, a great book whatever it takes to occupy you. Plan for at least two thirds of the time!
  3. You Are Not A Pack Mule! - Don't be tempted to take a load of carry on baggage to avoid checked bag fees. On a long haul flight the saving is not worth it. You are going to live in a cramped space for pretty much a whole day, so don't take it up with stuff! Only bring what you need in-flight and check the rest! While you will want to limit your carry on baggage, do bring your essential survival gear. Noise canceling headphones, neck pillows, eye mask etc. Your body will thank you! Longer flights leave more time for potential pickpockets. There are many cases of passengers falling asleep and thieves stealing from their luggage. So instead, make sure your tickets, passport and wallet are on your person and other valuables are buried deep in your baggage.
  4. Be Fully Rested – Long haul flights are NOT for catching up on sleep. Sure maybe you will sleep for 12 hours, but maybe you won't! Do not stay up all night hoping you will sleep on the plane – because you won't! Be fully rested and just take nap opportunities as they arise. Don't count on them to use up the time!
  5. Be Health Conscious. - Drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated during the flight. Especially electrolyte solutions such as Gatorade. It is a combination of dehydration and being immobile for extended periods which presents the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It is recommended that you avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to the flight, avoid diuretics lie caffeine during the flight and to dress comfortably in loose clothing. If you can get an aisle seat then do so and get up and walk around whenever possible. You will also want to wear compression socks.

Mold And Your Health

Molds are generally known to trigger allergic reactions and respiratory problems in individuals with weak immune systems such as children, the elderly and the ailing. There are several household molds that take place after a while The most shocking thing is that they cannot only be found in the dirty places, they hover around the clear houses as well. There is reason behind everything and household mold have a reason as well. The most common sources are, hidden wall leaks, undiscovered roof leak, water intrusion of any kind, like pipe leak, uncurbed humidity etc.

To deal with this problem, a complete assessment of the house has to take place by someone qualified in mold remediation. The air and the surfaces have to be checked so that the extent of the problem can be determined. To do this, you need technicians that are certified to the Institute of Investigation, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) so you can be sure that they know exactly what they are doing. The problem is severe and it should be immediately taken care of. One can only imagine the hazardous problems these molds can produce. The first symptom of having household mold is having musty doors.

The symptoms that the human beings would get is having dry cough, burning eyes and skin rashes. If you already have them, you cannot waste anymore time but call the specialized team. You must also find the source of the problem and make sure that the right repairs are done to ensure you do not experience the same problems again.

People cannot overlook those molds because they cause more harm than people are aware of. They secretly do their job in silence and no one really knows it until they are faced with the ultimate problem. Those molds grow so fast but remain unchecked for a long time, no one pays much heed to them until they are so severe that the house owners need medical attention.
The team is specialized so they know just what to do. In the final analysis, to eliminate the problem completely is our main goal. To do this we use infra red inspection technology. This is used to inspect the walls inside to determine whether water leakage has been dealt with completely. It also helps establish whether the molds have been removed completely. It is important to use a professional for any mold remediation works.

Dealing With Sewage Clean Up At Home

Sometimes there are certain disasters in the home we can take care of ourselves, little things like a blown fuse, a leaky tap and so on. However, there are other issues which cannot be taken care of because of our health. For example, mold and sewage related incidents should never be handled on your own, because they can have a detrimental effect on your health and well being.

So let's talk a little bit more about sewage clean up. I know, I know, it's not the nicest subject in the world! However, it's the one I had to deal with this past week. My good lady wife and I had been out and about all day caught up with work and errands. We stopped off for an early dinner before heading home, but on opening the front door we were greeted by a stench the likes of which we had never smelled before – nor do I ever wish to smell again! Our septic tank had gotten backed up causing an overflow sewage. Both the main bathroom, our en-suite and the downstairs toilet were a mess! I know enough about bacteria to know that a) I was not touching this with a barge pole and b) it had to be dealt with now!

We scooted on over to the neighbors and used their phone to call in some emergency sewage removal experts who reached us in around one hour and took care of everything quickly. Amazingly, we only had to replace the flooring in the downstairs toilet which had taken the worst hit, and a few towels etc. But because we worked fast the damage was minimal.

What really struck me though was my father's reaction when we called to see if we could stop the night with him. He asked my why I hadn't just rolled up my sleeves, pulled on some waders and cleaned the mess myself. He honestly believed that it was just a case of us young folks being too darn lazy! He was appalled when I explained all of the reasons why that was NOT a great plan!

Untreated sewage has so much more than just a bad smell. It is full of micro-organisms, bacteria and parasites which can cause a laundry list of illnesses if ingested or are able to enter the blood stream view broken skin. Sewage is classed as a bio-hazard and should be treated much the same as you might treat toxic waste! I'm betting that you'd never try to clear up a toxic spill from factory right? So why would you try to clean up sewage? It can cause a multitude of stomach illnesses, skin infections and respiratory disease. That's not something you want to mess with.

Listening To Our Bodies

I always strive to maintain a fairly healthy lifestyle. I don't smoke, I rarely drink and recently I cut caffeine out of my life. When I first became interested in natural health, I was amazed at how diet can really change our lives. Our bodies are amazing and to be honest they might just be the only tool we need to keep ourselves fit and healthy! I have long since given up expensive gym memberships and exercise equipment. They can't provide anything better than my own body can! I run, go swimming.. and if I need to lift weights? I compromise by using items from around the house. One of the most interesting things I have come across is how our body tells us what we should eat and when – all we have to do is listen to it!

Have you ever really craved a certain food? We hear of pregnant women saying this all the time, but in truth we all experience cravings from time to time. It is usually a sign that our body is deficient in a certain nutrient. Our body knows it needs a top up and it tells you by making you desire foods containing it. It's actually fairly amazing to think that our bodies are capable of such things. The same applies when monitoring your diet. We do not need fancy diets or eating plans. Our body knows what it needs, it can tell us when it is hungry and when we are full. All we have to do is start listening to our own intuition and ask ourselves 'am I really hungry?' or 'do I really need a second slice of pie?'. All of the information is right there waiting for us if we were only willing to listen.

More to Damp than meets the eye

Depending on the climate you live in, it is more likely than not that you have encountered the negative effects of Damp in your Home.  Actually, I can't really imagine any positive effects .... and I always associated Damp with wet conditions, coming from the Wet n windy East Coast as I do.  But that is not the exlusive case at all, examples being the deep sultry south for instance and other areas where there is a large amount of ground water.  It's not just unslightly, it is a serious Health risk.  Asthma and Eczema are often linked to Mold spores that fill the air of any room with a Damp mold problem.  And it can be expensive too!  As a friend of mine found out in Atlanta, GA after what he thought was a foreclosure bargain, turned out to be an alergy nightmare.  He had to call in the local Mold removal experts and that cost several thousands of Dollars.  It could have been a lot worse, some of the Quotations he had got were multiples of the price the guys he settled with offered him.

Rooibos - where you been all my life

Recently I decided to give Coffee the boot.  I quit smoking a few years ago after 20 years and it wasn't long before I thought WTF did I ever smoke for?  I gave up drinking six or seven years ago, basically because I was an alcoholic (am an alcoholic? lol) and I have pretty much developed this theory, that if you NEED anything, get rid of it ;)
So yeah Rooibos, or Red Bush Tea comes from South Africa and I encountered it in my local supermarket while staring, confused as ever, at the myriad of Teas and Infusions available these days.  In fact whether it is a Tea or not, or what actually constitutes tea for that matter, I really don't quite know.  There is Tea as in Lipton that we all know from China and India and then there are all these alternatives.  Back to Rooibos - I admit I was attracted at first to the Native Chick with face paint on the box ha .... then I did a quick google on my Samsung and checked it out.  It originates not too far from Cape Town in a region called Cederberg it was used traditionally by the natives and then first experimented with as an alternative to our usual black tea, by Dutch settlers.
Anyway ... I will let you do a google around the finer points as it were, Wikipedia can set you up ready to write a thesis as usual ha ha ... but the point of this ramble is that I LOVE THE STUFF ... it has no Caffeine ... it has a really interesting taste (without sugar I think, but its traditionally drank with milk and sugar) and I just feel great alternating it with the occasional cup of Green Tea.  Give it a go and tell me what you think :)
